Diary of the turtle’s journey
A “diary of the turtles’ journey” by Nele Ströbel in her grandmother’s antique book.
It was created as part of a new start project by two artists who are also great cousins and passionate nomads. An artistic reconstruction of the journey of Moorish tortoises that my father Dieter Ströbel sent by mail from North Africa and that, in the middle of the war, ended up with Katrin Ströbel’s grandmother in Franconia. Mysterious aspects of this family history are to be communicated, visualized and published digitally. We both know the animals, but have never met in person. With the research of the journey, topics such as Africa/Europe, war and flight, oral history, navigating on sight in crisis, species conservation, identity and individualization are negotiated in terms of content. The result is a walk-in diary that can be virtually traveled through. Leporello drawings, terra cotta objects, and linoleum prints on blueprints combined with films and podcasts.
