Creativity proves to be a planned, spontaneous action between commitment and freedom. The ease with which artistic production disregards normative rules is comparable to what Claude L\u00e9vi-Strauss &gt;bricolage&lt; calls tinkering without traditional routine. The &gt;bricolage&lt; involves creative people of all backgrounds, artists, tinkerers and repairers, in slums or in lifestyle lofts. Repair becomes an inventive process, inspired by the &#8216;found facticity&#8217; of the faulty object. &gt;Defects&lt;, stripped of their negativity, trigger creative energies.    <\/p>\n<p>In the traditional sense, repairing means mending or restoring. The basic prerequisite for this is cultural knowledge of construction and functionality, coupled with manual skills. In many parts of the world, there is no certified training as a craftsman. The repairer has to rely on personal intuition and improvisation. But even in cultures with professional repair companies, the handling of manufactured goods in the new professions is <em>self-made<\/em> and &#8220;do-it-yourselfers&#8221; are conquering the everyday handling of things. In an increasingly complicated and complex world, two groups of believers face each other: &#8220;disposers&#8221; and &#8220;repairers&#8221;.     <\/p>\n<p>The blissful feeling of being able to make something &#8220;whole&#8221; again, regardless of the efficiency of the use of resources and time, is widespread in the private sphere. The process of repairing can be both an escape and a retreat into detail, as well as an act of creative exploration and an outlook. Just as fascinating is the &#8220;grand design&#8221;, a visionary act that makes a statement despite all the circumstances without getting lost in the details. No patchwork, reinventing everything, &#8220;thinking ahead&#8221;. As a visual artist, I stand in between: repairing tools, transforming architectural space with little material expenditure, giving things new meanings in a symbiosis of operating, repairing, modeling and assembling. By repairing &#8220;mistakes&#8221;, a creative act is created that brings about change and sets further solution processes in motion.     <\/p>\n<p><strong>The value of things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When things are repaired, they are not completely replaced but restored in a modified form. There are various reasons for this: for example, the awareness that the world&#8217;s resources are limited, fear of new things, poverty and thriftiness, the desire for personal intervention that increases the individual value of the repaired things, the intellectual incentive to improve things. <\/p>\n<p>Making and restoring things proves to be a universal activity that people pursue in a wide variety of professions.
