Introduction:
|
The drill is the most important component of any workshop. The western exhibition room transforms this tool into an object dominating the entire room. Designed for man's use, the drill is an embodiment or extension of the body through technical means. Despite electronics, the individual mechanical components of drills can still be understood. These parts are shown in numbered, socalled exploded drawings used by technicians and workmen. Such drawings enable the parts of the drill to be identified and replaced, allowing the drills to be maintained and repaired. | ||
Two artistic procedures, a) the contour and b) the digital print, allow me to visualize the aesthetics (a) and the structure (b) of the machine. (a): implosion consists of 11 metal contours first shaped like a drill. Aligned towards the center, all contours have the same material thickness and slowly mutate into a speech bubble. implosion is the artistic attempt to get closer to the aesthetic essence of a drill. The indi- vidual pieces of the work are hung from the ceiling on the room's diag- onal, decreasing in size as they go. (b): explosion. In this work, the structure and composition of the drill's components are investigated graphically. Significant elements of the drill are enlarged using digital printing. The parts are hung serially, but their dimensions in relationship to each other are changed. The maschinenraum presents the subject of repair sculpturally and in terms of objects. |
